The Chamber’s Small Business Leadership Council unanimously voted to support Medicaid expansion in an emergency session on June 10th

(PHOENIX) — The Small Business Leadership Council of the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce (GPCC), comprised of leaders of local small businesses, supports Governor Jan Brewer’s plan to restore Medicaid in the state of Arizona. About 74% of the GPCC’s member businesses employ between 1 and 50 employees, so the Council’s decision is strongly representative of the Chamber’s general membership’s sentiments.

“For small business to stay competitive and attract workers, we need to do all we can as a State to solve the problem of uncompensated care which hurts small businesses as they are creating new jobs,” says Todd Sanders, Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce President and CEO. “The plan proposed by the Governor is supported broadly by the business community and will help control the ever increasing cost of providing this benefit to employees.”

Here is an excerpt from the letter the Small Business Leadership Council wrote to Arizona State Legislators:

“As leaders of successful small businesses, we are impacted by increased health care costs through the benefits we provide to our employees.  Governor Jan Brewer’s Medicaid Plan is a strengthening and stabilizing component for small, growing businesses that are working to attract employees and thrive in today’s competitive economy.”

As a business case for the State of Arizona, this plan is the most financially responsible way to continue to provide basic health care to the working poor. The small business community stands with the Governor and those legislators who support this practical solution to the problem of uncompensated care in our health system.
